LAX’s long-awaited automated people mover has a new passenger-facing name: SkyLink. The elevated electric train is designed to connect the airport’s terminals with Metro, economy parking, ground transportation, and the consolidated rental car facility.

It is a major change for LAX, but travelers need a clear distinction between what is planned and what is available today.

What is LAX SkyLink?

SkyLink is a 2.25-mile elevated automated train system built to move passengers above airport traffic. LAWA’s plan includes six stations:

• three stations inside the Central Terminal Area;
• the LAX Economy Parking and Ground Transportation Center area;
• the LAX/Metro Transit Center;
• the Consolidated Rent-A-Car facility.

The system is intended to reduce the need for many ground-level shuttle trips and make connections outside the terminal loop more predictable. Earlier LAWA design information described trains arriving about every two minutes at peak periods and an end-to-end trip of roughly ten minutes. Treat those as planned operating details until passenger service begins.

Is the LAX People Mover open?

No, not for passengers as of August 5, 2026. LAWA currently calls SkyLink forthcoming. Airport advisory materials earlier in 2026 discussed a delay and hoped-for summer opening, but LAWA has not posted a confirmed public service date on its current project page.

Testing or a completed-looking station does not mean the system is accepting passengers. The reliable milestone will be a formal opening announcement from LAWA or FlyLAX.

What should travelers use now?

Metro

The LAX/Metro Transit Center opened on June 6, 2025 and serves Metro’s C and K Lines. Until SkyLink opens, Metro says a free LAX shuttle operates between the station and the terminals, generally about every ten minutes.

Rental cars

Follow the current LAX and rental-company shuttle signs for the Consolidated Rent-A-Car facility. Do not walk along restricted airport roads or follow a future SkyLink map as though it were an active route.

Terminal connections

All LAX terminals are connected after security by pedestrian routes. Outside security, the free Terminal Connector shuttle operates around the terminal loop. Read our terminal connection guide before a tight transfer.

Rideshare

Most standard Lyft, Uber, and Opoli pickups still use the LAX-it lot next to Terminal 1. Follow green LAX-it signs and either walk or take the free shuttle. Eligible premium ride categories may display a terminal-curb pickup option in the app.

How could SkyLink change LAX parking?

SkyLink will directly serve LAX Economy Parking, but it will not stop at every independent off-airport parking facility. Travelers using off-airport parking should continue following that facility’s current shuttle instructions unless the business announces a change.

Why SkyLink matters

The Central Terminal Area is constrained and busy. Moving Metro riders, rental-car customers, and some parking users above road traffic should reduce curbside vehicle trips and create a more legible airport journey. The connection to the already-open Metro station is especially important because it links the airport to rail without requiring a transfer to the old Aviation/LAX setup.

For most trips, plan to be inside your LAX terminal at least two hours before a domestic departure and three hours before an international departure. If you are parking off-airport, add time before that target for check-in, unloading, and the shuttle ride.

That is the useful short answer. Your best arrival time also depends on traffic, checked bags, your airline’s cutoff rules, mobility needs, and how busy LAX is when you travel.

Recommended LAX arrival times

• Domestic flight: arrive at the terminal 2 hours before departure.
• International flight: arrive at the terminal 3 hours before departure.
• Traveling with checked bags, children, accessibility needs, or a large group: add 30 to 60 minutes.
• Parking away from the terminal: add enough time to enter the facility, complete check-in, unload, and ride the shuttle.

The TSA recommends arriving two hours before a scheduled departure, and many airlines advise three hours for international travel. Your airline’s own check-in and bag-drop deadlines always take priority.

Build a realistic door-to-gate timeline

1. Check traffic before leaving. Century Boulevard, Sepulveda Boulevard, the 405, and the LAX terminal loop can change quickly.
2. Leave time to park. Have your reservation ready, photograph where you parked if needed, and keep travel documents with you.
3. Allow for the shuttle. Loading, traffic, and the order of terminal stops all affect the ride.
4. Check in and drop bags. Bag acceptance can close well before departure. Verify the deadline in your airline app.
5. Clear security and walk to the gate. LAX terminals are large, and some gates require a longer walk than the terminal entrance suggests.

When should you add extra time?

Add at least 30 minutes when traveling around Thanksgiving, Christmas, spring break, summer weekends, or major events in Los Angeles. Do the same if you need to return a rental car, check oversized luggage, travel with a pet, or arrange wheelchair assistance.

LAX publishes estimated security wait times, but treat them as a snapshot rather than a promise. A short displayed wait does not account for driving, parking, airline check-in, or the walk to your gate.

What about TSA PreCheck or CLEAR?

Expedited screening can reduce uncertainty, but it should not be used as a reason to cut the schedule too close. Lanes and operating hours vary by terminal and time of day. Confirm availability for your airline and checkpoint before relying on it.

A sample parking timeline

For a 10:00 a.m. domestic departure, aim to enter the terminal around 8:00 a.m. If you are using off-airport parking, a sensible target is to arrive at the parking facility around 7:15 to 7:30 a.m., earlier on peak travel days. Then calculate your drive so you reach the facility by that time.

For a 10:00 a.m. international departure, aim to enter the terminal around 7:00 a.m. and reach the parking facility before that.

Before you leave home

• Confirm the terminal and flight status in your airline app.
• Review your airline’s checked-bag cutoff.
• Check traffic and the official LAX website.
• Keep your parking confirmation and shuttle dispatch number handy.
• Use the terminal arrival time, not the parking arrival time, as your two- or three-hour target.

How to reach Lyft at LAX

1. Collect checked baggage and go to the lower/arrivals level.
2. Follow the green signs marked LAX-it.
3. From terminals near Terminal 1, walking may be simplest if everyone in your group can manage the distance and luggage.
4. From other terminals, board the free LAX-it shuttle at a signed pickup point.
5. At LAX-it, check the zone shown in your Lyft app and follow the lane signs.

LAX says LAX-it shuttles operate around the clock and generally arrive about every seven minutes, though terminal traffic can affect the interval. Review the official LAX-it instructions before your trip.

Can Lyft pick you up at the terminal curb?

Standard ride-app pickups generally use LAX-it. Certain eligible premium ride categories may offer terminal-curb pickup. Availability and product names can change, so rely on the pickup point displayed in your app and the current LAX guidance rather than an old screenshot or blog post.

Accessibility needs can also affect the best pickup plan. Use the accessibility options in the app and review LAX’s current passenger assistance information before arrival.

Where should you meet the driver?

Do not ask a driver to stop in an unauthorized terminal area. At LAX-it, confirm the driver’s name, vehicle, license plate, and assigned lane before entering the car. If the app moves your pickup point, follow the newest instruction shown on screen.

Where does Lyft drop off at LAX?

Ride-app drop-offs for departing passengers are made at terminal departure areas. Tell the driver your airline and verify the terminal in the airline app before leaving. Airlines can operate from different terminals for ticketing and boarding, so the flight details are more reliable than memory.

• Wait until you have your luggage before requesting the ride.

You can now walk between every LAX terminal without leaving the secure area, provided you are already through security and the connecting passage is open. LAX completed post-security pedestrian connections across the terminal complex in 2023.

Outside security, passengers can walk along the terminal loop or use the free Terminal Connector shuttle. The right choice depends on your terminals, luggage, mobility, and connection time.

Option 1: Walk between terminals after security

Post-security walkways connect Terminals 1 through 8 and the Tom Bradley International Terminal (Terminal B). This can save time because you normally do not need to clear TSA again simply to reach another connected terminal.

The full route from Terminal 1 to Terminal 8 is roughly two miles. Adjacent-terminal walks are much shorter, but gate location matters. Allow more time than a map suggests if you are carrying luggage, traveling with children, or moving between distant concourses.

Option 2: Use the Terminal Connector shuttle

LAX operates a free terminal-to-terminal connector on the lower/arrivals level. Look for the blue LAX Shuttle & Airline Connections signs and verify that the bus is marked for terminal connections. The service operates 24/7, but traffic in the central terminal area can make walking faster for nearby terminals.

Because the bus is outside security, you may need to clear TSA again at the destination terminal. Ask your airline before exiting the secure area during a tight connection.

Which route should you choose?

• Adjacent terminals and light luggage: walking is often straightforward.
• A post-security connection: stay airside when possible to avoid another checkpoint.
• Mobility concerns or heavy bags: ask your airline about assistance; do not assume the full walk will be comfortable.
• A long cross-airport transfer: compare the airside walking route with the terminal shuttle and ask airline staff if time is tight.

Do you have to go through security again?

Usually not when you remain inside the post-security terminal network and already have a valid boarding pass. You may need additional screening after an international arrival, when instructed by Customs and Border Protection or your airline, or when you exit to the public side of the terminal.

How much connection time should you allow?

There is no universal minimum. Domestic-to-domestic travel with checked bags transferred by the airline is different from an international arrival that requires immigration, baggage claim, customs, and re-checking luggage. Use the connection offered by your airline as a starting point, then consider:

• distance between gates, not just terminal numbers;
• whether your bags are checked through;
• passport control and customs;
• mobility or family needs;
• the risk of a late arriving flight.

What about the LAX People Mover?

SkyLink is designed to move passengers between terminal stations and facilities outside the terminal area. As of August 5, 2026, it is not open to passengers and LAWA has not posted a confirmed public opening date. Continue to use today’s walking routes and shuttles until LAX announces otherwise.
