LAX People Mover Delay: October 2026 Construction Update

Updated October 15, 2026: LAX says the SkyLink People Mover is still in final testing and certification. It is not open to passengers, and LAX has not announced a confirmed public opening date.

The most important LAX transportation update for fall 2026 is simple: travelers should not plan on using the automated People Mover yet. At the same time, active road, curb, and pedestrian projects continue to affect the airport approach and terminal loop.

The latest LAX People Mover status

The official LAX SkyLink page currently says the system is in its final testing and certification phase. LAX also says opening information will be posted on that page. No confirmed passenger-service date is listed.

That distinction matters because earlier projections have changed. A train moving during a test, a completed-looking station, or an older projected opening date does not mean the system is carrying travelers. A formal announcement from LAX or Los Angeles World Airports will be the reliable signal that passenger service has begun.

Until then, continue using the transportation option shown on current airport signs. Our detailed LAX SkyLink guide explains the planned stations and how the system is expected to work after it opens.

Why the delay matters for LAX travelers

SkyLink is designed to connect the Central Terminal Area with the LAX/Metro Transit Center, LAX Economy Parking, the Ground Transportation Center area, and the Consolidated Rent-A-Car facility. Until that connection opens, many travelers must still complete the final part of their trip by shuttle or current ground transportation.

The delay also overlaps with major roadway and curbside work. Even if your flight and security plans are unchanged, construction may affect the drive to LAX, the correct drop-off lane, a pedestrian path, or the location of a shuttle or pickup zone.

Current construction around LAX

The following impacts are based on LAWA advisories available October 15, 2026. Dates and work hours may change because of weather, airport operations, or field conditions.

Westbound Century Boulevard overnight closures

Westbound Century Boulevard is scheduled for full overnight closures between Jetway Boulevard and Vicksburg Avenue through Friday, November 13, 2026. Posted work hours are Monday through Thursday from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. and Fridays from midnight to 7 a.m.

During the work, southbound Jetway Boulevard is also scheduled to close between 98th Street and Century Boulevard. The westbound Century Boulevard Departures ramp is inaccessible during the closure, while the Arrivals ramp remains open. Drivers should follow the posted detour to the Sky Way Bridge. Review the official Century Boulevard closure advisory before leaving.

Terminal 5 Arrivals restrictions

Sewer work is scheduled to affect the Terminal 5 Arrivals level through Friday, November 20, 2026. Portions of the drop-off lane, median island, inner bus lane, and nearby pedestrian areas may be restricted. LAWA says vehicle and pedestrian detours will shift by phase, with signs and flaggers directing traffic.

Terminals 2 and 6 curbside work

LAWA’s construction bulletin for the week of October 12 lists 24-hour curbside work at Terminals 2 and 6. Travelers may encounter restricted inner lanes, relocated pickup or ground-transportation areas, reduced sidewalk space, and pedestrian detours. Additional overnight restrictions may occur elsewhere in the Central Terminal Area.

What Airport Spectrum customers should do

  1. Leave extra time. Construction can slow both the drive to the parking facility and the shuttle trip to your terminal.
  2. Check the official advisory on travel day. Do not rely only on a route saved earlier in the week.
  3. Use live navigation and posted detour signs. The Century Boulevard work may affect your approach depending on direction and time.
  4. Keep your reservation ready. Save the confirmation and shuttle details on your phone.
  5. Review the pickup instructions. The Airport Spectrum shuttle map shows where to meet the complimentary 24-hour shuttle after your trip.

Airport Spectrum Parking is located at 5757 W Century Blvd. SkyLink will not stop at Airport Spectrum, so customers should continue using our complimentary terminal shuttle even after seeing test trains at LAX.
